Divine Inspiration: Wedding on Waikiki Beach, Oahu

A Real Wedding

Photography by Cassandra Dieterle

Kammy Gomez and Jensen Chang selected the tropical setting at the elegant Halekulani on Waikiki Beach for its breathtaking views and planned an outdoor ceremony and reception on the famous Hau Terrace. When the morning of the wedding arrived Kammy was distressed to hear that a storm had hit Oahu bringing torrential rains to the island. Despite the dismal morning showers, her prayers for an outdoor wedding were answered that afternoon. The skies cleared miraculously and Kammy was able to walk down the aisle with Diamond Head in the distance just as she had envisioned. She was a glamorous bride in a strapless white gown and the gentlemen wore elegant black suits. As a collector of Vans tennis shoes, the groom contributed his signature style by giving his attendants vintage black and white Vans to wear with their suits. Kammy and Jensen asked both of their pastors, Dr. Russell and Mari Stewart, to preside over the wedding ceremony, and a festive reception followed in the Halekulani ballroom.

The beautiful details of the wedding day belied the brief two months they had to prepare. The couple’s longtime friend Valerie, a coordinator with Honolulu Wedding Consultants, proved to be invaluable according to the bride, “We shared our ideas with Valerie, and she helped us put it all together with our own sense of style.” For Jensen and Kammy their wedding was much more than becoming husband and wife. They wanted to share their first family communion in the presence of the guests to pronounce their love for one another as well as their devotion to the Lord. The celebration embraced the traditions of their Christian faith with one of Kammy’s favorite bible passages, Galatians 5:22, as the unifying theme. In lieu of numbers, each reception table was distinguished as one of the nine fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, meekness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and temperance. Guests received favor tins, each with a sterling silver love charm tied with an apricot ribbon. A three-tiered wedding cake was inscribed with the couple’s scripture and decorated with bright green orchids. Bouquets and tall centerpieces of apricot-hued roses were highlighted with tiger lilies, tulips, green orchids, and white hydrangea. Reception tables glowed with frosted votives set on colorful dupioni silk linens, a beautiful complement to the modern floral arrangements. Valerie commissioned photographer Cassandra Dieterle to design a display of fifty childhood photos of the bride and groom that were strung with white lights around the lanai at the reception. Cassandra also surprised the couple with a silk hand bound book containing Polaroids and handwritten sentiments from each of their wedding guests. Friends and family danced late into the evening, sharing the love and joy of a match made in heaven.
